Baby Lock Summer School — Roll up Pencil Pouch
Can you believe that it is the end of July and school will be starting soon? I honestly can’t believe it’s already back to school season. I love making little pouches this time of year to hold all my supplies for sewing, writing, coloring, makeup, you name it! So today I’m so excited to share a roll up pencil pouch for Baby Lock Summer School! This roll up pouch is perfect for so many different things, not just pencils. It is also the BEST beginner sewing project because all it requires is you sewing a straight line! It’s a no brainer and today I’m giving you a step by step tutorial on how to make the roll up pencil pouch. So if you are a beginner, don’t worry I have you completely covered. Let’s get started making the perfect roll up pouch!!
- Supplies:
- 3 pieces of woven fabric measuring 8” x 17”
- 1 piece of fusible fleece measuring 8” x 17”
- 2 pieces of 1/2” wide ribbon each measuring 10” long
- A measuring tool – I like this one
- A marking tool
- Sewing Machine — I’m using my Baby Lock Brilliant
- Iron
- Fuse fleece to the wrong side of one of the three pieces of fabric. Then fold a different piece of fabric in half, wrong sides together, length wise, and iron.
2. Find the center of the folded in half piece of fabric and mark a line down it. From that line measure 1” out on either side and mark down the length of the fabric.
3. Place the folded piece of fabric on top of the right side of the piece of fabric with fleece fused on, make sure your markings are facing up. Pin in place and stitch down each line that you drew. Trim threads.
Tip: It helps a lot to start on the center line and work your way out. This way your fabric won’t shift out of place as you sew. This is also why we pin this piece in place.
4. Place one end of each ribbon on the right side of the fabric you just sewed, right above the pocket ( on one of the shorter sides). Baste in place.
Beginner tip: Basting is when you use a longer stitch length to hold something in place. In this case it’s holding the ribbon in place until we do the regular stitching over the top.
5. With the final piece of fabric, place it right sides together with your pocket/fused pieces and pin in place. Starting at the shorter edge without the ribbon pieces start sewing around the pouch. When you get to the edge with the ribbon make sure the pieces are tucked into the middle and no extra parts of the ribbon are sewn into the side seams. Leave a 3” opening on the short end you started at.
6. Using the ribbons, pull the fabric right sides out and then iron, folding in the raw edges that you haven’t sewed closed.
7. Top stitch all the way around the pouch making sure to close the 3” opening. Finish off with a good pressing.
Beginner Tip: top stitching is stitching that will be seen on the outside of your project.
Now you are complete with your rolled up pencil pouch! Wasn’t that such a great project? I hope you enjoyed it and if you end up making one make sure to tag me and show me what you made! Thanks for following along!
