How to Make a Felt Leaf Garland

With the changing of seasons I always get the itch to make something new and fun. When it started to get a tinnnny bit cooler I knew it was time to come up with a fun fall craft project. I love searching pinterest for inspiration and I found a gorgeous paper leaf garland that I loved the colors of. I decided I could totally do that in a felt and sew them together! And so I headed to Joann for lots of colorful felt!

My mom and I both wanted to make a garland so we spent about 30 minutes at the felt section in Joann finding the perfect colors and I am SO HAPPY with what we found!!

Then we began the cutting! We started by using my Silhouette cutting machine which was great and all, it gave us a good shape but we had to finish cutting them out as we had some difficulties. So ultimately we ended up cutting the rest by hand, which wasn’t too bad because the leaf shape was pretty simple.

After they were all cut out I sewed two leafs together because I wanted to add more dimension to the garland. Now that all is said and done I’m so happy I did that! It looks so pretty and full.

Next came putting the leaves in order and attaching them to the binding. It was a little tricky at first but I realized that if I folded under the back leafs this too added more dimension and made the garland look so good. It was tricky and took a little time to sew down but I love the result!

To see the full details on how I sewed the leafs onto the binding you can watch the video below. I know it makes it a lot easier to see exactly what you need to do than have someone try to explain it.

I love how this looks on my mantle and makes such a fun statement, without being too messy like real leafs would be. I think it would be fun to do a wreath in this same method next! If you make one I would LOVE to see it!

Happy Sewing Friends!
