How to Sew a Swimsuit — Assembling — Swimsuit Sewbration Day 4
Now we are ready to actually start sewing and making your fabric turn into a swimsuit. We have made sure you got the right fabric and made sure the pattern is perfect for you, now we are going to assemble the pieces of fabric. Every swimsuit is going to be different in the assembly process so I don’t want this to seem too broad, but it will not be the same for every pattern.
Today we are assembling the main pieces of the swimsuit. Which will usually include a front bottom, back bottom, front top, back top. Like I said before, each swimsuit will be different so these are just the basic pieces. For the suit in this post, those are the pieces I had and assembled at this point. Make sure you have read over my post on the Top 10 Tools you Need to make a swimsuit so you know what tools you should be using.
First, I took the fashion fabric pieces of the back bottom piece and the front bottom piece and sewed the side seams with the right sides together. With the right sides still together, I sewed the crotch seam. When that is done, set it off to the side and do the same thing with the bottom lining pieces as well.
Once you have the lining bottoms and fashion fabric bottoms complete you will take the fashion fabric bottoms with right sides out and put the lining, with right sides still together, inside of the fashion fabric bottoms. We are going to make these pieces now “come together” to make essentially one piece now.
Line up the crotch seam and the side seams to make one bottom piece and pin it together. Then to make putting the swimsuit together easier, I suggest using a long zig zag stitch to baste the lining to the fashion fabric. This will make tomorrow’s step SO MUCH EASIER. I have tried to skip it before and it just ends in frustration! Baste the fashion fabric and lining together around the leg seams and waist.
That will finish off the bottoms for today. Next you do the same steps with the top pieces. The only part that you will do differently is that you will leave the neckline of the lining and fashion fabric separate. So DO NOT baste these two together. This will allow us to put in the bra padding later on.
By the end of the day you will have a “rough” swimsuit complete. So that tomorrow we can focus on putting in the elastic.
