How to Install Snaps
A lot of times when you are sewing something for kids you are doing to need a closure to finish it off. I loooove zippers in kids clothing but sometimes it is necessary to use snaps. At first, I was a little hesitant about putting something into the clothing and not know how it is going to work out. But after a lot of trials and error, I have found what I love and what works best for me so I put it all in a video to share.
Initially, the video I made was over 17 minutes long (Click HERE to check it out). I talk all about the different kinds of snaps and how to install each one. But as I was editing I realized that people want this quick and easy and they definitely don’t have time to watch that long of a video about snaps. ( Now if you do, that’s AWESOME! and I definitely suggest watching it to see all the ins and outs of snaps) BUT if you don’t have the time, energy, whatever, I broke the video down into three other videos on the different kinds.
First, we have plastic Kam snaps. I love the colors and variations of these but when I used them in kids clothing they were pulling out and didn’t stay in place very well. I read that if I tried the smaller size I might have better luck but I just went straight to metal snaps after that. However, I love the variety they offer! So many fun colors, styles, and sizes so I will have to try them again!
Second, I tried the Snap Source metal snaps. Again, they have a great variation in sizes and colors. These held up SO MUCH BETTER! The only issue I have had with Snap source was that at first, I couldn’t place the snaps exactly where I wanted them with the tool they have you use, and they would shift in the process of being placed. However, over time and with practice, I have gotten better at placing them.
Now with all that being said, I then heard a lot of people saying how they love the Dritz tool to set metal snaps so I had to try it out and compare it with the Snap Source tool. Right away the Ditz tool was SO MUCH EASIER! I’m not sure why other people need to complicate things because this tool is so easy to use I go back to it time and time again. It is small and easy to store, which also makes it great when you are placing your snaps. There isn’t a lot of room for slipping/ movement.
There are pros and cons to all of these snaps and snap tools but overall I found that I love working with the metal snaps and I love the Dritz snap tool.
