My Everyday Statement Top
I always dream of making dresses and having a whole closet of beautiful, but also very functional, dresses. But then I sew a dress and it is beautiful and fabulous but only gets worn for special occasions and church on Sunday’s and I wonder why did I even do that if I’m not going to wear it more often. This realization has led me to reach for patterns I will actually wear more often, like every single day, if I could. At this point in life I’m a comfy top and jeans kinda girl. I can save the fabulous dress for the special occasion and make a statement top that pairs perfectly with my favorite jeans and be just as happy. That is exactly what I did when I paired the new Brenda pattern from Made for Mermaids and the perfect stretch crepe from Raspberry Creek Fabrics.
About a month ago I saw the women’s Brenda pattern released from Made for Mermaids and immediately loved the style and fit. It looked so good on every single person who tested the pattern. The Brenda is a dolman style knit top with so many options, which is one of the key things I look for in a new pattern. I love versatility and this top has a lot of it. I chose to do the tie front, which I have been loving this fall, and faux button front. Ultimately, the faux button front is what sold me on this shirt. I hate the time and effort it takes to do button holes, so when I saw you didn’t have to in this top I jumped in! I used my favorite hack of using a sewing machine to sew the buttons on which made this project so quick and easy!
Looking for the perfect fabric is always such a thrill to me, and definitely a whole other hobby in itself. I love getting my fabrics from Raspberry Creek fabrics as they always have such a great selection and high quality materials. When I saw this gorgeous mustard fabric with the navy and grey flowers on it, I knew it would make the perfect everyday top with that extra touch of flair that I love. It is a stretch crepe but holds its shape so well I knew it would be the perfect fit for the Brenda pattern and an amazing everyday statement top. My two boys are always tugging on my shirts so I knew I needed fabric that would hold up to their wear and tear and this crepe definitely does!
I love how this shirt makes me feel so much more put together than a T-shirt but it is just, if not more, comfortable! This is my ideal everyday top and I love that it has my favorite color in it.
Happy Sewing Friends!!
