How to Sew a Rainbow Softie

Hey Friends! I am so excited to share a bright and colorful but super easy tutorial with you today. This initiative, Sew a Softie, was started by a wonderful lady named Trixi. She put this together to help children all over the world learn to sew. For the whole month of July there are new tutorials posted everyday teaching how to make a different softie and even some great giveaways happening! I am honored to be apart of this group of bloggers to help spread our love of sewing. For my tutorial I wanted to do something fun and colorful that was very me so I thought a rainbow would be the perfect fit!

• Supplies:
• A rainbow selection of 9”x 12” pieces of felt (feel free to make whatever size!)
• Marking tool – I love this one from Clover
• Hand Needle
• Embroidery Thread
• Fairfield Poly Fil
• Scissors
• Round object like a bowl for tracing a clean edge (optional)
• Sewing Machine (optional)

1. To start I took the piece I wanted to be on the outside ( I used pinks instead of reds) and used a bowl to trace a perfect half circle. The bowl was a little smaller than I wanted my largest piece to be so I actually just used that line as a reference. But using a bowl makes for clean even lines. I then cut this piece out on the line I drew.

2. I continued this process with my other colors but I would place the color I had just cut out right behind the next piece in line and free draw where I wanted it to be cut. You can see this in the picture below with the shadow of the first piece underneath the next piece in line.
Because I used so many colors I wasn’t able to continue the bowl method, but if you are able to use smaller bowls for every color that would make your lines much cleaner. However I really love how free mine feels instead of being so exact.

3. I continued this process through all my colors, editing my cutting as I went along.

4. When all the colors were cut out I free drew a cloud that would go on one half of the bottom of the rainbow. Once I liked that cloud I cut out 4 of the cloud pieces.

5. Next I was ready to sew my rainbow together. I decided to keep it simple and did a basic running stitch in a similar color as the felt. I started with the largest pieces and worked my way down to the smallest.

6. To support the rainbow I finished it off with a solid white piece of felt the same size as my largest color, the pink, hand stitched into the back of it. This also hid all the hand stitching I had just done to each color.

7. To finish of the rainbow I stitched two cloud pieces wrong sides together leaving a 2” opening. I used my machine for this so that the poly fil wouldn’t be escaping but it is an option if you don’t want to use a machine.

8. I stuffed the clouds with poly fil just enough so I could still match up the opening pieces. Once it was filled I took it back over to my sewing machine and stitched the 2” opening closed.

9. To add the clouds to the bottom of the rainbow I hand stitched them all in a similar fashion as the running stitch but I made sure the stitches were tighter together and held the cloud close to the rainbow.

10. Once both clouds are sewen on you are finished with your rainbow. Congratulations 🎉🌈🌈
